Skills Program | Effective Problem Solving

About this course

Problems and decisions are part of every working day, yet few of us have been taught how to handle them effectively. This QCTO-aligned Skills Programme gives you a clear, systematic process for identifying and solving problems within your own scope of authority, and for making decisions you can explain and stand behind.

The course covers Knowledge Module 1, Principles and Practices of Problem Solving and Decision Making, in three chapters:

  • Problem Identification and Investigation - recognise the characteristics and common causes of workplace problems, work through the stages of problem solving, and understand the role of communication.
  • Decision-Making Processes - follow a step-by-step decision-making process, understand what influences decisions, and compare the PROACT, Rational and Intuitive decision-making models.
  • Tools and Techniques for Problem Solving - apply the 5 Whys, Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams, SWOT analysis, brainstorming and Pareto analysis to real workplace scenarios.

Each chapter includes practical, scenario-based activities so you can check your understanding as you go. A downloadable Learner Guide supports your learning, and the Learner Workbook forms the practical component: you download it, complete the activities and upload it to your learner profile. The programme concludes with a Final Integrated Summative Assessment (FISA), completed in person.

This programme suits anyone who wants to handle workplace problems with more confidence, from team members to supervisors and new managers, in any industry.
